Streeterville Real Estate in Chicago

loop real estate Real Estate Analysis

Five years ago, Kelly Dougherty, 42, left the Edison Park neighborhood for the heart of the city — the Metropolis Condominiums at State and Monroe — and never looked back.

Dougherty and wife Chris Kadow-Dougherty aren’t alone in their appreciation of Loop living. The Loop enjoyed a surge in residents from 2000-2010, according to the Chicago Loop Alliance’s Economic Study and Impact Report released Thursday.

“Shortly after we moved here, we sold our car,” said Dougherty, a sustainability consultant and proposal manager at Weston Solutions, an environmental and construction firm with offices in the Loop. “The transportation options are excellent.”

Dougherty now faces “an arduous five-minute walk” to work, while his wife takes the L and a bus to her candy-making kitchen, Whimsical Candy, home to La-Dee-Dahs.

The couple previously had 20- to 30-minute or longer train commutes to work each way each day.

Dougherty enjoys the opportunity to attend after-work functions with his extra time.

“It is time I no longer have to be cramped in a train, doing nothing,” he said.

The Loop has proven to be a true neighborhood, he said. Chris walks the dog each day to Grant Park, and all the locals know each other’s dogs’ names.

“People who live here bump into each other every day,” he said.

Dougherty appreciates the neighborhood attractions: the Art Institute, Millennium Park and Grant Park among them. He also appreciates the eco-friendly environment. His building has a green roof and encourages recycling, and and he doesn’t need a car to go to a bar, restaurant or concert.
